Wisdom Teeth Removal
“Wisdom teeth” is the common term for third molars. These are the last teeth to form and erupt in the mouth. Because of their location in the mouth and the anatomy of these teeth, many problems arise, and many times, wisdom tooth extraction is necessary among our patients in the Ladera Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Mission Viejo area.
Reasons For Wisdom Teeth Removal
-
Decay | Wisdom teeth are very prone to decay due to the difficult access to clean sufficiently. This decay can grow rapidly and lead to painful toothache and infection inside the tooth. Wisdom teeth removal may be necessary in this situation.
-
Periodontal Abscess | When wisdom teeth erupt, they often create a pocket in the gums that can be difficult to clean, leading to a gum infection and periodontal abscess.
-
Impaction | Wisdom teeth removal may also be needed when wisdom teeth come in horizontally. This impaction most often affects the molar next to it by destroying the roots or causing bacteria to accumulate and form a cavity.
-
Pain | The eruption process is slow for wisdom teeth and can cause a large amount of tooth pain or toothache. Most of the time, these teeth are erupting at an age that means our Mission Viejo area patient is in the middle of work or school, making it even more difficult to deal with. That’s why we recommend calling our office for immediate wisdom teeth removal.
Removal Process
At Facer Hales Parker Dentistry, we have 3D cone beam imaging which can greatly assist in the diagnosis and wisdom tooth removal. A two-dimensional x-ray will not show the relationship of the tooth and the nerve appropriately, but a three-dimensional image may also help show the orientation of the tooth in relation to the other teeth.
Sedation is a great option when having wisdom tooth extraction. Ladera Ranch dentist Dr. Parker is also trained in oral sedation. Please visit our dental sedation website for more information about our sedation dentistry options and how they can help with difficult appointments.
