Laughing Gas Dental Sedation

Laughing gas, otherwise known as “happy gas,” is a very mild form of sedation that can help decrease your anxiety about having dental procedures completed. This type of sedation does not have many restrictions, so virtually any patient is a candidate for laughing gas sedation (even kids!). Laughing gas does not produce any long-lasting side effects after the dental procedure is over. There are also no eating restrictions before or after using laughing gas, and you can drive yourself to and from your dental appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation is a way for you to experience virtually painless dental treatment without being unconscious during the procedure. There are no IV anesthetics involved – you will be given oral medication before your treatment that will put you in a very relaxed state. Oral conscious sedation makes it possible for you to avoid feeling discomfort or pressure during the procedure, though you will be awake and able to respond to verbal commands. Oral sedation has lasting effects that vary between patients. You’ll need someone to drive you home as you may still feel the effects of this sedation for a few more hours.

IV Conscious Sedation

IV sedation dentistry is ideal if you are extremely afraid of dental treatment, need dental surgery, or will be undergoing extensive restorative procedures. For this type of sedation, we combine oral and IV medications to ensure you are comfortable and unaware of your dental procedure. We’ll monitor your pulse and oxygen levels throughout the entire procedure, and you may also be hooked up to a heart monitor. With IV sedation dentistry, you’ll also be required to have someone to pick you up after your dental appointment and stay with you at home for two to four hours.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is reserved for patients who have severe dental phobias and those needing complex surgical treatment, such as wisdom tooth removal. Patients will not be conscious while under this level of anesthesia and will not experience any pain or be responsive to any verbal commands. Patients who undergo general anesthesia will be fully monitored by an anesthesiologist during their appointment. Recovery from general anesthesia will take time, so it’s recommended that patients make plans to have someone drive them home and take time off to rest for a couple of days before resuming normal activities.
