Tooth Removal
We all hope that our permanent teeth will last a lifetime, but that is not always the case. Our permanent teeth can become damaged or decayed and may need to be removed or extracted. There are many reasons why you may need your tooth pulled. You may need to have a tooth extracted because it is very decayed, or it is broken or loose. Also, if your teeth are overcrowded or you are getting braces, you may need a tooth extraction, or teeth extractions, to free up room in your mouth.
Whatever the reason for needing teeth extractions, Dr. Parker is here to help guide you through the process.
Getting Your Tooth Pulled
When getting your tooth extracted, Dr. Parker will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After your tooth is extracted, Dr. Parker will advise you and give you a post extraction regimen to follow. Having a small amount of bleeding is normal after your tooth has been pulled. If you have any questions after your tooth extraction, Dr. Parker will be available to answer them.
Tooth Extraction Recovery
To help make the recovery process easier, there are some steps you can take for faster healing after a tooth removal procedure:
-
Be sure to avoid anything that might prevent normal healing.
-
Do not rinse your mouth vigorously.
-
Do not smoke.
-
Avoid drinking through a straw for 24 hours.
-
Follow your diet as Dr. Parker suggests.
During the first few days following the extraction, you can apply an ice bag if you are experiencing any swelling. Please call Dr. Parker right away if the swelling does not go away. You can brush and floss your teeth as normal, but don’t clean the teeth next to where the tooth was removed.
