The body attempts to fight off these bacteria by sending blood to the gums. This blood contains the body’s natural defenses against bacteria. Thus the gums will bleed when a patient has gingivitis.

What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is the advanced progression of gingivitis. When the bacteria are allowed to continue to infect the gums, the gum tissue will pull away from the teeth, forming pockets and leading to recession. Your jawbone may even start to recede as your body tries to fight off the infection. Receding gums and bone lead to tooth loss.
There are various stages of severity of periodontal disease. Dr. Facer will tailor a plan specific to the severity of the disease for each of our patients and work to eradicate the gum disease completely.
